Builder's toolkit

From assigned to merged

The details behind the overview's four steps, ready to copy.

01

Get assigned

Comment on the issue explaining how you'd build it, and tag @NMZivkovic asking to be assigned. If someone else is already on it, pick another, or tag them if it's been sitting untouched for a while.

Your comment on the issue
Hi @NMZivkovic, I'd like to work on this one for Mergetober.

How I'd build it:
- Source: <which API or SDK I'll read from, and how I'll authenticate>
- Data: <what gets ingested into Cognee, and how it's shaped>
- Testing: <how I'll test it against a real account>

Could you assign it to me?

02

Try Cognee first

Spend a few minutes running Cognee locally before you build on it. Install it with pip install cognee and follow the installation guide and docs.

terminal
pip install cognee

# Explore a bundled demo graph, no API key needed
cognee-cli demo

03

See where your code goes

Data source connectors live in the cognee-community repo under packages/connector/<name>/, and the Notion connector is a good reference to copy the shape from. Agent and framework integrations live in the cognee-integrations repo.

Follow the contribution rules

Read Cognee's contributing guide before opening your PR. It covers branches, signed-off commits (git commit -s) and the DCO line your PR description needs.

terminal
# Branch from main in cognee-community, or from dev in cognee
git checkout -b feature/gitlab-connector

# Sign off every commit (adds the DCO line)
git commit -s -m "feat: add GitLab connector"
Paste at the end of your PR description
I affirm that all code in every commit of this pull request conforms to the terms of the Topoteretes Developer Certificate of Origin.
