Lifeline: Mapping the Blast Radius of Open Source
The Zerops ChallengeAug 2026
Lifeline is an interactive dependency resilience platform that reveals the hidden fragility inside modern npm applications. Instead of stopping at package.json, it recursively maps the entire transitive dependency graph, tracing how packages are connected deep into the open-source ecosystem. It identifies critical single-maintainer dependencies, analyzes their health and importance within the graph, and lets developers simulate what happens if one of these dependencies suddenly fails. The resulting blast-radius visualization makes otherwise invisible supply-chain risks tangible and easy to understand. Built as an 8-service distributed system on Zerops, Lifeline uses an orchestration API, Valkey (Redis) queue, autoscaling background workers, a Python analytics engine, and a stateless WebSocket service to resolve, process, and analyze large dependency graphs in parallel. As analysis happens, progress is streamed live to the frontend, allowing users to watch their dependency universe take shape. The core experience goes beyond simply reporting a risk score: developers can explore dependencies, trace critical paths, trigger failure simulations, watch the impact propagate through the graph, and understand exactly how much of their application could be affected. Lifeline turns an invisible software supply-chain problem into a visual, interactive system that developers can explore, understand, and act on before a dependency becomes a real failure
